COUNT DOWN: THE US IS SET TO STRIKE SYRIA IN DAYS--OBAMA

The United States military has provided Barack Obama with a range of options for launching an attack on Syria and is "ready to go" with an offensive, the US defence secretary has said.
There is now a growing belief in Washington that a US strike against Syria, possibly involving cruise missiles or long-range bombers, could take place in the next few days.
Chuck Hagel said military officials had presented the US president with "all options for all contingencies" and put resources in place to take action against Syria over its purported use of chemical weapons.
"We are prepared, we have moved assets in place to be able to fulfil and comply with whatever option the president wishes to take, if he wishes to take any of the options he's asked for," he told the BBC. "We are ready to go, like that."
The White House insisted on Tuesday that Barack

4 WORK MISTAKES YOU DO NOT REALISE YOU ARE MAKING

When you’re the new girl at work, you do in your power to stay on your best behavior. You show up to the office early, leave late, dress conservatively, and absolutely never, ever check your Facebook page from your work computer.
everything
But, as the weeks go by, it’s easy to slide into a sense of comfort and let your guard down, following in the footsteps of your co-workers (who know just how far they can bend the rules). And soon, you’re missing deadlines, tweeting covertly, making excuses as to why you’re not as productive as before, and in general, setting yourself up for a not-so-great performance review.
So what happened? Well, it’s simple—you forgot the basics. If you’re looking for a way to get back into gear, revisit the advice you got when you were first starting out in the professional world, and follow these easy (but often ignored) bits of advice.

EGYPT VIOLENCE: OBAMA CANCELS JOINT MILITARY DRILLS WITH EGYPT

Barack Obama

Barack Obama has cancelled US military exercises with Egypt in a carefully-calibrated rebuke to its interim government that stopped short of a more significant suspension of aid.
Reacting to the killing of more than 500 anti-government protesters, the US president interrupted his family vacation on Martha's Vineyard to condemn the bloodshed, but stressed that any move toward peaceful democracy was a difficult process that could take decades.
"We appreciate the complexity of the situation," he said. "We recognise that change takes time. There are going to be false starts and difficult days. We know that democratic transitions are measured not in months or even years, but sometimes in generations."

Obama also issued a reminder of why the US

HOW TO APPLY TO A BUSINESS SCHOOL WITHOUT A BUSINESS BACKGROUND

by
While the majority of students at top business schools come from the consulting and finance industries, there is also a large group of people (like me!) who come from more non-traditional backgrounds: nonprofit, tech, retail, traveling around the world on a sailboat—you name it.
Applying to b-school as a less traditional candidate can actually be a major advantage because your unique background will help you stand out from the crowd. It can also be tricky, though. Because you’re likely coming from a field or organization that admissions committees are less familiar with, you’ll need to do a little more work to prove to them that you meet their bar for admissions.
As someone who just applied to b-school while working at an education nonprofit, figuring out the best way to present my experience is something I’ve thought about a lot. Here are five tips that really helped me put my best foot forward.

1. Tell Your Story

I know it sounds a little obvious, but one of the most important things you can do as a non-traditional candidate is explain very clearly in your application what you do and why you do it. Most business schools want to build diverse classes that pull from a

3 RULES FOR FOLLOWING UP WITH A RECRUITER

by Yolanda Owens

You’ve been stood up.You applied to a position, confirmed
your resume was received, and got the wink and the gun from the recruiter that your application looked good. So you’re popping your collar, thinking you’re in like Flynn, waiting for the hiring manager to call to schedule an interview.
But a couple of weeks have gone by, and you’ve got nothing but radio silence and the sound of your employment biological clock occupying your thoughts. Tick. Tock.
So, what’s a neglected job seeker to do? You’re still interested, but you aren’t quite certain how to break the silence without being awkward.
This recruiter’s advice: Go ahead and follow up. Just make sure to use your professional common sense and avoid reacting to your feelings of job search angst. With that in mind, here are a few recruiter-friendly suggestions for following up on your applications.

1. Email, Don’t Call

Between sourcing through thousands of resumes, back-to-back phone screens and interviews, endless administrative tasks, and traveling, recruiters don’t have

FULL DETAILS OF HOW 44 WERE KILLED IN BORNO

What began as dawn prayers at a mosque in northeastern Nigeria ended in a gruesome massacre Sunday as militants brandishing automatic weapons killed 44 worshipers in the country's troubled Borno state.
It's not clear who's behind the attack, but many Nigerians will suspect that the militant group Boko Haram, which has wreaked havoc in the region for several years, are the perpetrators.
The Nigerian government is struggling to control the bloodshed between the mainly Muslim north and Christian south that has claimed at least 2,800 lives since Boko Haram came to prominence in 2009, according to Human Rights Watch.

Who are Boko Haram?
Boko Haram means "Western education is a sin." The group's ambitions range from the stricter enforcement of Sharia law -- which is derived from the Koran as the

The interim national chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande sank to a new low in this regard yesterday when he rudely and falsely described President Jonathan as a “kindergarten” leader who treats national issues with levity.

5 WAYS TO BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE IN A NEW JOB

You walk through the door on the first day of your new job, and there it is: that shrinking fear that tells you that you don’t know anyone, you don’t know how things are done, you don’t know who to talk to, and you don’t know how friendly or over-the-top professional you need to be. You don’t even know where the good coffee is.
And for many of us, that’s just the beginning. Starting a new job can stir deep feelings of anxiety, making you feel as though you’re on the outside, not good enough, or smaller than you really are.
But, the sooner you can face those fears, the sooner you can dive in and start making an impact. Here are five helpful ways to keep those nerves at bay, ease your fears, and feel more confident at your new job.

1. Relax

Walk into a new job with your body full of tension and your fists (even metaphorically) clenched, and you’ll not only stress yourself out, you’ll put everyone
