No fewer than eight persons were on Monday burnt to death at
Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, Zamfara State, for an alleged blasphemy against
the Prophet Muhammad by one of the deceased.
The school is located in Talata Mafara, the headquarters of Talata Mafara Local Government Area.
Reports reaching Gusau, the State capital, said the assailants broke
into a house where the alleged culprit was hiding for safety, and set
him ablaze along with his seven friends, completely razing the house to
the ground.
Sources said Talata Mafara town had been overrun by the mob as they searched for the alleged blasphemer.
The school authorities immediately closed down the institution, while
the Zamfara State Police Command imposed an indefinite curfew on the
town.
A statement in Gusau by the Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy
Superintendent Shehu Muhammad, said the curfew was aimed at restoring
peace in the area.
