Sources close to the legal team said they took the decision to seek legal redress in a court free from manipulation.
Already a new group, The Rebranded Indigenous People of Biafra (TRIPOB) has thrown its weight behind the decision to drag the EFCC before the African Commission of Human and Peopless Right over its case Mrs Jonathan.
The group, in statement by its spokesman, Chima “Phillip Effiong” Osuji, condemned what it called the “the undue harassment and campaign of calumny masterminded by the EFCC against Patience Jonathan.”
The group insisted Mrs Jonathan “cannot get fair trial in a Nigerian court commended and Mr Timipa Jenkins Okonipere for his decision to drag the EFCC before the West African Court.
“TRIPOB believes that under the current political dispensation in Nigeria, Mrs. Jonathan cannot obtain fair and impartial judgment. Furthermore, by virtue of the enviable political height which the Goodluck Jonathan family has attained, it would be most advisable if Mrs. Jonathan tgoes outside for relief…”
because, we strongly believe that, there is a premeditated plot to humiliate and disgrace the former First Lady.
We therefore commend international lawyer and human rights activist, Mr. Timipa Jenkins Okponipere for the wise decision to drag the EFCC before the African Commission of Human and Peoples Rights based in Banjul, The Gambia, if the EFCC failed to stop the harassment of Mrs. Jonathan within 14 days. It is a welcome decision.
Accordingly, TRIPOB advises the Goodluck Jonathan Family to remain calm and put their trust in God Almighty; as they shall surely be vindicated.”
The All Progressives
Congress (APC) has described as shameful the threats coming from a Niger
Delta group and the protest at Port Harcourt zonal office of the
Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) in support of the former
first lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan over the freezing of her dollar
account containing about $31.4 million.
A statement signed on Sunday by the APC Acting National Publicity
Secretary, Comrade Timi Frank, described the threat as baseless and
empty threat against the Federal Government, saying it is high time
people realize that the era of campaign is gone for now.
“My candid advice to Mrs. Jonathan is to apologize to Nigerians for the
current economic hardship which Mr. Jonathan’s regime could have easily
averted; instead of sponsoring shameless protests against the
government, anyway, Nigerians are waiting for the apology”.
The statement warned the youths to desist from such shameless act of
defending politicians for a pot of soup adding that the present APC
administration is fighting corruption so as to secure their future.
The Bayelsa born APC stalwart said it is surprising that Mrs. Jonathan
had such big amount of money in her custody and people from her region
were dying of adequate water supply saying, “it took President Buhari’s
government no time to recently commission a water project even in
Otuoke, Bayelsa state where Goodluck Jonathan was born”.
“The show of shame called protest at the Port Harcourt office of the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to demand the unfreezing of
Mrs. Jonathan’s dollar accounts was uncalled for and there is nothing
wrong if the former first lady explain the source of $31.4 million to
anti-corruption agency.
“The country is presently going through recession as a result of
mismanagement of economy left behind by Patience Jonathan’s husband led
administration which APC is working hard to correct as soon as possible.
“It should be made clear that there is nothing wrong for EFCC to invite
Mrs. Patience Jonathan for questioning if the organization suspects fowl
play in accumulation of such big amount of money. Again, the era of
above the law is over. This is a change government of accountability
where rule of law is paramount”.
The APC spokesman further said: “The number four citizen of this country
today, Senate President Bukola Saraki, whose office is prominently
recognized by the constitution is facing trial not to talk of one former
first lady whom Nigeria constitution does not recognize.
“Again, we should also remind those who have forgotten that a national
leader of the APC, who was once the Vice President of this nation,
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, was once investigated. So, why must Mrs.
Jonathan’s case be different”, he queried.
The statement calls on the leadership of the EFCC not to feel threatened
in carrying out its official duty but to ensure that whoever is caught
in the web is properly brought to book.
