You know why? It is first a perception thing in the sight of any investor. They see rigidity in the govt, they see aggression spokesmen, they see arrogance and dictatorial tendency among the ministers, they see naivety and poor self confidence, they see problems of rule of law etc. When the President said on a national TV that he won't obey the court order from his burning passion to fight corruption, he sent a wrong signal to the investing community globally even though probably not knowing.
Investors aren't stupid, they see the way government officials were
making open statement and threatening MTN months back on penalty
instead of allowing institutions to quietly carry out their duty, look
at the way Chief Audu Ogbe was threatening Notore and Indorama few days
ago.
Inexperience, arrogance and poor communication skills are major killers in the government and not just crude oil price or mono-economy syndrome.Things like this are part of the problem.
I made the point clear then even though rubbished by some quarters that de-marketting the country under the guise of "saying it as it is " won't bring investment in anyway. Becos no business man is a charity giver or bringing business into your country just because your President is saying the so called truth about the country as it is. I made it clear back then that all these the President is going about saying about the country will come back to hurt us.
The CBN governor went to the US weeks ago to woo investors, pls ask how was the meeting and how many investors came for the meeting? It was that bad. The meeting that caused him to increase MPR from 12% to 14%. How did the meeting go?
The government must be going to do the following:
1. The government must go back and market the country by more in the showing of her strength than her weakness
2. The minister should go for training and learn communication skill
3. The rule of law must be followed at all costs even if you are fighting a murderer.
4. Watch what you say on national TV as a government official
5. The government must learn diplomacy in addressing issues that involves national security, Economy and interest.
6. Takes responsibility and stop passing the bulk. No investor loves a government that passes bulk
7. Don't talk down on your economy by telling people "dangerous days ahead".You wont encourage investors with that
Perception carries more strenght in wooing investors than infrastructure
God bless Nigeria
